Dear Family and Friends,
We are writing to you on behalf of our son, Ryan. On July 10, 2007 Ryan was diagnosed with Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes, which means he will be insulin dependent for the rest of his life. When Ryan was first diagnosed he had to spend four days in the hospital to learn all about his disease and to get it under control. Just image watching your child cry every time he/she has to have a needle, it just breaks your heart. Ryan is required to check his blood sugars by pricking his fingers at least 6-8 times a day. He also has to take at least 6 shots a day. This disease is very hard to control and is a challenge everyday. The insulin Ryan takes is not a cure, it is his life support. Insulin allows him to stay alive, but it does not prevent the devastating effects of diabetes such as kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage leading to amputations, heart disease and even a stroke. Even though we both have diabetes, it is so much harder to see our child go through the dreaded process of checking his sugars and injecting him with a needle numerous times a day.
We have decided to do more than just “hope” for a cure. On October 4th, our team “Ryan’s Lions” will participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) WALK TO CURE DIABETES located at the DCR Hatch Shell on the Esplanade – Boston, MA. We are looking for family and friends to join our Family Team “Ryan’s Lions”. If you join our Team you will be asked to collect donations You’ll enjoy a fun event and receive a Ryan’s Lions t-shirt.
