We are a public sector local for workers throughout Massachusetts
SEIU Local 888 is a union of almost 10,000 members across the Commonwealth of Massachusettts. We believe in the dignity and worth of workers and services they provide and we are dedicated to improving the quality of public services, the lives of workers and their families and to creating a more just and humane society.
We are the people who provide public services in the Commonwealth, both at the municipal level and throughout state government, quasi-public authorities, and non-profit organizations.
- We maintain our streets and plow our snow;
- We fill potholes and fix water and sewer lines;
- We are bridge draw-tenders;
- We protect our water supply throughout our water departments;
- We dispatch emergency services;
- We inspect all of the elevators and escalators and ensure their safety;
- We help residents and tourists have smooth access to Steamship Authority ferries;
- We care for our veterans at our Soldiers’ Homes;
- We implement public health programs;
- We are front line supervisors and administrators;
- We are engineers, planners, chemists;
- We process permits, coordinate delivery of services, run payrolls;
- We maintain smooth operations in city and town halls;
- We are secretaries; bookkeepers; accountants; administrative assistants;
- We make homeless shelters welcoming;
- We run Housing Authorities;
- We make sure that the Registries of Deeds run smoothly;
- We maintain order and cleanliness in the public schools;
- We are Head Start teachers and aides;
- We drive the school buses and monitor for safety;
- We are school nurses and therapists;
- We support teachers in the classroom and help implement IEP’s;
- We run the most effective and efficient state lottery of the country;
- We provide our school children with nutritious meals;
- We are the professionals in public higher education;
- We are the librarians and library support staff in universities and communities;
