SEIU 888 Endorsed Candidates Win Mayoral Races in Quincy and Fitchburg

SEIU 888 endorsed mayoral candidates Lisa Wong and Tom Koch both cruised to victory last night. In Fitchburg, Wong won with a mandate-setting 75% of the vote to become Fitchburg’s new Mayor. In Quincy, Koch beat incumbent Mayor William Phelan by 2000 votes.

“This is a great day for us” remarked SEIU 888 President Susana Segat. “Our members in Fitchburg and Quincy have shown us that our COPE program works. We look forward to working with mayors who share our commitment to providing high quality public services in the days and months ahead.”

In the weeks leading up to the election, to qualify for our endorsement the candidates were required to complete surveys and appear before SEIU 888 members at regional meetings.

After the regional meeting presentations, the members of the Quincy and Fitchburg Cope Clubs made endorsement recommendations that were approved by the Executive Board of SEIU 888.

Once the candidates were endorsed, our Local went to work educating our members by issuing GOTV mailings and conducting phone banks, as well as providing critical volunteer support on Election Day.

“Our members showed real strength,” said President Segat. “These wins reflect what can be accomplished when our members come together and work for change. I want to thank all of our members for their hard work as we look forward to improved working relationships with our new mayors in Quincy and Fitchburg.”
