Carlene Roberts, Boston Health Commission

Job Title:
Carlene is a health inspector for the environmental health office of the Boston Health Commission.

Job Description:

Carlene monitors the indoor air quality of public and private buildings and homes. Additionally, she tests these locations, if necessary, for asbestos and mold. If a hazard is present, she writes up a violation for the building/home owner and gives them a time period in which to fix the problem. She also inspects Boston Public Schools to make sure they are environmentally safe, testing for hazards such as poor indoor air quality (too much carbon monoxide for instance) that will negatively affect the health of the students and staff.

Carlene must also respond to emergency calls. For instance, recently a company pumped oil into the basement of a home that had switched to using natural gas. She had to go to the scene and test the air quality for harmful fumes to make sure the house was still safe to inhabit again. Including the above, she also educates people on asthma and how to live in an environment that will be safe and healthy for people with asthma.

Robert is a substance abuse clinician for Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment Services for the Boston Public Health Commission. More specifically, he works in the methadone clinic and outpatient clinic doing counseling for both.

Background:
Job Description: Robert facilitates individual and group counseling to help people either stop using drugs and alcohol, keep from using, or avoid relapsing. He uses psychotherapy to help clients learn to modify their negative behaviors. Through his counseling sessions, Robert teaches “coping skills to the sick and suffering, giving them the tools they need to get acclimated back into society.” Clients using methadone must have a history of opiate dependence and are required to come in once a week for counseling.

Most of his clients come from halfway houses, off the street, or referrals from Boston Medical Center. His client base is about half young and half old and is a variety of races and ethnicities. The majority of them have Hepatitis-C and many have HIV/AIDS. Lately, the clinic has seen a sharp increase in the number of users in their early 20’s as a result of oxycontin.
