MILLIS TOWN HALL EMPLOYEES ORGANIZE WITH LOCAL 888

April 4, 2012

Town Hall employees won their collective bargaining rights after achieving majority certification by the Commonwealth's Department of Labor Relations on January 27, 2012. This was the culmination of a several months-long member-driven campaign to unite town employees.

Mike Giampietro from the Building Department spearheaded the drive with help from Local 888 staff.

The union campaign was also a local news story. Giampietro was quoted in the Milford Daily News saying, “We want a stronger voice in our future with the town and more respect for the work we do.”

On February 15th about two-thirds of the new members gathered with Mike Foster, Local 888 Regional Representative and Local 888 Organizer Alex Reusing, Local 888 Organizer to begin the process of bargaining with the Town. They voted by acclamation to elect a diverse bargaining team that includes employees from the Library, Public Health, Building and Finance departments. No one expects the fight for a first contract to be easy, but now town workers will a have a voice, a seat at the table, and a strong team backing them up. Stay tuned for more updates!
